BEHAVIOUR SUPPORT

Understanding behaviour. Building skills. Improving quality of life.

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is about understanding why a person may use behaviours of concern and recognising what they may be trying to communicate through their behaviour. At Above & Beyond Disability Solutions (AABDS), we take a person-centred approach to Positive Behaviour Support. We work alongside participants, their families, support networks and other professionals to understand the individual, their environment and the factors that may be influencing their behaviour. Rather than simply focusing on changing behaviour, we look at what is behind the behaviour and how we can create positive, meaningful change.

Our approach

Our Positive Behaviour Support practitioners work with participants to:

  • Understand the purpose and function of behaviours of concern.

  • Identify triggers, patterns and environmental factors that may influence behaviour.

  • Develop practical, evidence-based strategies that are tailored to the individual.

  • Build communication, coping and everyday life skills.

  • Create environments that promote safety, independence and participation.

  • Support families, carers and support workers to respond consistently and confidently.

  • Improve the participant's overall quality of life and opportunities for meaningful participation.

Reducing restrictive practices

At AABDS, we are committed to supporting participants to reduce and, wherever possible, eliminate the need for restrictive practices. We focus on proactive, preventative strategies that address the underlying reasons for behaviours of concern. By improving communication, developing new skills, increasing choice and control, and creating supportive environments, we aim to help participants achieve greater independence, safety and quality of life.

Working together for lasting change

Positive change happens when everyone around a participant understands their needs and works together. Our team collaborates with participants, families, support workers and other professionals to develop strategies that are practical, respectful and sustainable in everyday life.

At AABDS, we believe every behaviour has a reason. By understanding the person behind the behaviour, we can work together to create meaningful and lasting change.

Daniel Lawson-2-3.jpeg

Daniel Lawson - Behaviour Support Practitioner

Daniel brings almost 10 years of hands-on experience from special education settings, working alongside key stakeholders, parents, and students to improve educational outcomes by addressing behavioural concerns. He also understands care from the other side, having supported individuals with ASD, ADHD, BPD, and other neurological conditions directly. Combined with a biomedical science background adding a strong foundation in his understanding of the physiological complexities of disability, Daniel provides a clinical, educational, and personal lens through which he approaches Positive Behaviour Support.

For Daniel, good Positive Behaviour Support starts with understanding the person, not just the behaviour. He works closely with families and carers to build their capacity and confidence, taking the time to form genuine, trusted relationships with participants and those who support them. By exploring what behaviours are communicating and how environments can be adapted, he helps create conditions where individuals are better understood and supported.
